Martinsburg buries Fairmont Senior 40-0 in AAA semifinals

Zach Newhouse rushed for 122 yards and four touchdowns to lead Martinsburg to a 40-0 win over visiting Fairmont Senior in the Class AAA semifinals Saturday in Martinsburg.

Martinsburg also got a 167-yard rushing performance from Marcus Scott and touchdowns by Dustin Peters on a 6-yard run and a 22-yard Cameron Shelton reception. Overall, Martinsburg racked up 440 yards rushing.

With the win, Martinsburg advances to the Class AAA finals against Parkersburg at noon Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium.The shutout ended a nine-game winning streak for Fairmont, which was shut out for the first time since 2003. Fairmont was held to 111 yards on the ground and 138 passing.

Friday’s late games

  • TOLSIA 7, JAMES MONROE 6: At Lindside, No. 4 Tolsia upset previously unbeaten and top-ranked James Monroe in Class AA.

    Darin Parsley scored on a 1-yard run with 11:33 left in the second quarter and B.J. Evans kicked the extra point to give Tolsia (11-2) a 7-0 lead.

    James Monroe (12-1) cut the lead to 7-6 as Ernie Tincher scored on a 27-yard pass from Taylor Robertson with 11:33 left in the third quarter. But Logan Ray’s extra point kick went wide to the left.

    With nine seconds left in the game, Ray missed a 43-yard field goal attempt that was short and to the right.

    Tolsia will face No. 3 Wayne (11-2) in the championship game Friday night in Wheeling.

WHEELING CENTRAL 57, GREENBRIER WEST 22: At Wheeling, Brandon Tucker ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns as No. 1. Wheeling Central defeated No. 4 Greenbrier West in the Class A semifinals.

Tucker scored on runs of 5 and 15 yards. Wheeling Central’s Chris Martin ran for 61 yards and two touchdowns. P.J. Henry scored a TD after intercepting Greenbrier West’s Jaron Childers.

With Greenbrier West trailing 35-0 in the first half, Trent Walker was moved from tailback to quarterback and threw a 23-yard pass to Childers. Walker then scored a two-point conversion to trim the deficit to 35-8 at the half.

Walker returned a punt 55 yards for a TD and scored on an 18-yard run in the second half. He ran for 146 yards on 25 carries.

Wheeling Central (13-0) will face No. 2 Williamstown (13-0) in the championship on Dec. 2.
