Two late defensive plays by South Charleston safety Pierria Henry didn't save the day for the Black Eagles.
But, they sure came close.
Henry knocked down a Bridgeport pass with 1:44 left and intercepted a pass one play later as the No. 2-seeded Black Eagles survived at University of Charleston Stadium with a 28-25 Class AAA state semifinal victory over the third-seeded Indians (12-1).
The win sends Coach John Messinger's defending state champions back to Wheeling Island Stadium for Saturday's noon championship game against the winner of tonight's University-Brooke game in Wellsburg.
"I have to give it to the defensive line," Henry said. "They put pressure on the quarterback and the defensive backs were jamming the receivers at the line."
The Indians got the ball back with 23.6 seconds left, but after two incompletions and an 8-yard completion, a pass to South Charleston's 30-yard line misfired as the clock expired.
South Charleston (12-1) led by 21-10, but Alex Sutton scored on a 1-yard touchdown with 11:58 remaining. The Indians scored on the two-point conversion when quarterback Jeff Hill - who appeared to be bottled on on the option -- pitched to WVU recruit Wes Tonkery, who trotted into the end zone.
However, 20 seconds later South Charleston quarterback Tyler Harris connected with wide receiver Tevin Spurlock on a 61-yard touchdown for a 28-18 SC lead.
The two hooked up on a 40-yard touchdown in the first half.
Bridgeport bounced back with a 10-play, 53-yard drive completed with a Sutton 2-yard score with 7:04 left.
