Tyler Harris threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and South Charleston claimed its second straight Class AAA championship with a 28-7 win over Brooke on Saturday.
Harris, a contender for the Kennedy Award, given to the state's top player, performed like a finalist as he ignited South Charleston's offense, accounting for 278 total yards.
Pierra Henry had first-half TD receptions of 86 and 45 yards. He also intercepted Brooke's Cotey Wallace on the third play of the game and ran it back 45 yards for a touchdown.
In a game that matched up two of the states premier passers, only Harris was able to get anything going through the air. The junior threw for 198 yards.
Wallace, another Kennedy Award contender, threw two interceptions and was 8-for-19 through the air for 95 yards. He finished as Brooke's leading rusher with 72 yards.
South Charleston ruined Brooke's attempt at its first-ever perfect season and first state title since 1990. Under first-year head coach Tom Bruney, the Bruins ended the season 13-1 after a 3-7 campaign last year.
In a game featuring two offenses that virtually mirror each other, only South Charleston was able to make anything happen. The Black Eagles outgained the Bruins 339-214.
South Charleston relied heavily on big plays from Henry, who was named the team's most outstanding player.
Henry's first TD catch came on a screen pass where he spun away from two tacklers near the line of scrimmage and dodged Wallace downfield before reaching the end zone 86 yards later. The play broke a 17-year-old championship record for the longest reception previously held by DuPont's Randy Moss.
Down 14-0, Brooke's only score came on the first play of the second quarter after Mason Bates forced a Harris fumble deep in his own end of the field. Brooke drove 25 yards on five plays and Ryan Lazear punched it in from 8 yards out.
The Black Eagles quickly answered when Harris found Henry behind the defense for a 45-yard TD on their next possession.
Harris also scored on a 47-yard run in the third quarter for the final margin.
Harris finished the season with 2,400 yards passing and 28 TDs. Wallace ended his senior season at Brooke with 2,121 yards through the air and 25 scores. The Kennedy Award winner will be announced later this month.
